Empty Space Productions presents The Dumb Waiter, a modern classic by Nobel laureate Harold Pinter, coming to The Armidale Playhouse from 24 July to 1 August 2026.

A razor-sharp post-World War II comedy of menace, The Dumb Waiter depicts a world where humour opens the door and menace walks in. Two men wait in a basement room for instructions, filling the time with tea, football, the newspaper, and small irritations.

Darkly funny, tightly wound, and unsettlingly familiar, this modern classic turns the everyday into something dangerous and asks: what happens when a system demands obedience without explanation?

Get ready to laugh and then suddenly feel the room change.

Directed and produced by Lisa Goldzieher, The Dumb Waiter stars (N.I.D.A) graduate Stuart Lumsden, last seen in Armidale as Leontes in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, alongside Armidale theatre maker Jonathon McAteer in this sharp-witted two-hander.
